This presentation will examine the events surrounding the 2004 Indonesian tsunamis and how they affected South India (namely the state of Tamil Nadu). This presentation will explain the initial events surrounding the tsunamis, the damage caused by them, and how the community reacted. South India is a dynamic area that is both highly influenced by emerging technology, as well as rooted in traditional values, beliefs, and economic consequences. The 2004 tsunamis played an important part in realization of this, and due to the unique culture of the area, rebuilding of these communities has been handled in various ways. We will explore the cultural history of these areas, and use this information to explore the current socio-economic situation of South India. We will also cover the unique geological characteristics of the region that caused these events to occur, and how preventative measures will be taken to prevent another comparable disaster in the future. note
